Congrats to long time iLuvBBall supporter Andre Edwards

Andre Edwards is a valuable community member and a staple in the long Island tapestry of AAU basketball. He is a personal friend to iLuvBBall.com and was instrumental in giving countless student-athletes the platform to show off their basketball powers and procuring scholarships to college. His take no shorts attitude sometimes gave people the wrong impression of Mr Edwards but those who knew him well knew that his heart was in the right place and though his experience and a alumni of the school of Hard Knox he was only trying to prepare his pupils for the harsh future that awaited them. He was never afraid of competition. In fact we welcomed and even sought out the toughest competition. The mentality behind his actions were everything we do now doesn’t matter, but what matters is what’s at the end of the finish line. And with Dre, that finish line was usually at some college. Dre was the guy that not only got you the looks from the college coaches, he took you there in his own car on his time to make sure you were taken care of. He did all all of this as a high school coach and as the founder of Team Underrated Basketball Academy. Team Underrated is one of long Island Longest running independent AAU/ Travel programs in existence today and he was doing it before any one else even thought of Travel basketball. Kudos Andre Edwards and we hope that your baby Team Underrated Basketball Academy is in good hands.

Well now we are proud to announce that our friend Andre Edwards is new Assistant Coach of the NYIT Bears Mens Basketball program in Westbury. If he puts half as much passion, dedication, and effort into his new endeavor as he has in the past we’re sure that he’ll be a very successful college coach and always a friend to the long island basketball community and iLuvBBall.com.

We’ve listed a few of Coach Dre’s past achievements below.

  • Former head coach Wyandanch High School and St John the Baptist High School
  • Won Class B Championship
  • Won Catholic League championship
  • Multiple players from his AAU program are playing D1, D2 College basketball,  and host of others playing D3, NAIA, JUCO,  and Prep.

Good Luck Coach Dre.

GUESS WHO’S GOING TO THE AAU NATIONALS CHAMPIONSHIP GAME?

Congrats to the AAU Long Island Lightning Wagner team on their great AAU season’s success so far, and even more for their 7-0 record in reaching the 2016 14U AAU Nationals Finals at Disney’s Wide world of Sports! All they do is win, win, win no matter what [DJ Khaled]! Lead by Brentwood’s 3 headed dragon, #14  Zed Key (6’6″), #7 Bryce Harris (6’2″), a man-child that makes his presense felt on both sides of the floor and game changer, and #2 Kenny Lazo (5’8″) their cool as ice point guard and floor general that remains steady through he whole game no matter who’s on the floor. But all this success wouldn’t be achievable without their great supporting cast: The 2nd big man #25 Brandon Pizzingrillo (6’5″), grabs boards and protects the paint. 3 point sniper #8 Brandon Weiss (5’5″). The gritty in your face defensive guard #23 Aaron Jaffee (5’9″). Don’t sleep on the 5’7″ 2 guard #12 Carleton (CJ) Parris who is also a 3point shooter / defensive specialist. 3 guard #32 Kieran Dorney (6’3″) another shooter with length and shooting skills to match. #21 is (5’8″) Bora Soybas crafty slasher, that can get to the basket at will. #15 Jagger Fernandez (5’9″), is another shooting specialist, and last but not least #33 Max Caspi (6’3″), a strong forward that can bang in the paint or shoot the 3, so pick your poison! This wouldn’t be possible if they weren’t lead by the lightning’s most successful head coach, which was inducted into the Lightning Hall of fame, Coach Warren Wagner who is a coach that pays attention to detail and stresses that his team is fundamentally sound and the “team” mentality. Tomorrow will be the biggest game he has ever coached as he takes his 14U team to the National Finals at Disney’s Wide World of Sports Main Court at 10:20 AM. Though not a small task we have faith that Coach Wagner and his boys won’t disappoint.  There you have it. This is our NY Lightning Wagner AAU finalist team representing Strong Island. Good luck gentlemen and hope you bring home the hardware. We’ll be watching and rooting from NY.

WHO IS ZED KEY?

This power forward from Brentwood Long Island, NY is on his way to being one of the best big men in the class of 2020! Yeah you heard me, the best all around big man in his class. Not just because of his athletic abilities or his size! This kid has footwork, work ethic, and if try and play him too close he will give you the “work” (pun intended). We’ve been following this guy from early 2014 when he was invited to participate in the tryouts for the Alzheimer’s all-star Basketball team which usuallyy consist of upper classmen and the best ones at that. We were alerted of this kid from the founder of the classic himself Gordon Thomas. He said “Hey you guys know about that young kid in Brentwood, about 6’4″ as an 8th grader?” No we didn’t because he was under the radar playing locally and he wasn’t playing in the big name AAU circuit games as yet due to his age. Well we went to watch this kid and we weren’t disappointed. Not only did he compete against the rising juniors and seniors, but he dominated the run and made it to the last cut! This kid is the real deal and then some! We did some research on him and here’s what we found on Zed Key of the Brentwood Indians.

Zed Key

14 years old,  class of 2020

6’5 and a half 190 lbs

AAU team: Long Island Lightning Wagner / NY Team United (Brentwood Jimenez)

Personal accomplishments:

  • Zed also received the President’s award for outstanding academic achievement

  • Zed Helped lead his AAU team to win the AAU basketball league,  beating the Ohio Rebels (LeBron James’ team) a Team that hadn’t lost a game in over a year on the way to winning the championship.

  • Zed also led his team to win the Rumble in the Bronx.  The first Long Island Lightning team to win the tournament at any age group!

You don’t believe the hype? Well check out this video.

Remember this kid is only 14 and is already taller that most of you will ever be! He’s a good kid, great athlete, and college recruiters dream in school! #Flashback Team BK with a BIG Comeback Win over Team LI – Wheelchair Classic

Team BK with a BIG Comeback Win over Team LI

After being down almost 93% of the game, Team Brooklyn completes an improbable comeback to beat Team LI in the 43rd Annual Wheelchair Charities Basketball Classic and advance to the Finals.

Team Brooklyn (Blue) vs Team Long Island (Black)

After a pretty slow start by both team’s starting squads, Team LI’s second team lead by Josh Nicholas(St. Anthony’s) came off the bench firing! Josh was agressive from inside and outside and had 9 points in the quarter, including a 3 pointer right before the close of the first quarter that gave Team LI the 19 to 12 lead over Team BK going into the 2nd quarter.

The start of Quarter 2 was more of the same as Team LI was running and gunning from all over and by the time the 5 minute substitution timeout rolled around Team LI had a commanding 33 to 19 lead over Team BK. Once the subs came in, Team Brooklyn picked up it’s energy a bit, led by St. Francis commit Rasheem Dunn(Jefferson), who finished the half with 10 points. By halftime Team LI’s lead was cut to 10 with the score 36 to 27 at the break.

Coming back from halftime the teams played pretty even with Team LI and Stony Brook commit Mike Almonacyhitting the hoop and the harm And-1 layup to give his team the 43-32 lead at the 5 minute substitution timeout. We don’t know if it was the confusion at the time out since it was an And-1 and the mandatory substitutions had to happen, but Almonacy still had the FT attempt to do from the And-1, but Team BK seemed to use that short break to get their act together. Following Almonacy’s made FT and subsequent substitution, Team BK caught fire from downtown including a pair from Malik Sylla(Transit Tech) that cut the deficit down to just 4, which caused Team LI’s coach Gary Charles to call his only 2nd half timeout to slow down the bleeding. At the end of the 3rd quarter Team LI was holding on to a slim 48 to 42 lead over Team BK.

4th Quarter begins and back and forth we go. Team LI’s Mike Almonacy scored a layup midway through the quarter to make it Team LI 52 Team BK 48. Team BK did not back down and with 2 mins left in the game cut their deficit down to only 2, and 30 seconds later took their first lead of the contest at 59-58 thanks to an And-1 play. After an airball and an unforced turnover on Team LI’s next two possessions, Team BK did their job by running down some clock and hitting some FTs. Clutch FTs by Gerald Williams(Westinghouse) who finished with 11 points and Dunn who finished with a team-high 17 points stretched Brooklyn’s lead to 63-58; while Team LI desperately threw up three and drives to the basket in attempts to draw three point plays to no avail. After yet another airball by Team LI went awry and Team BK secured the rebound and dribbled out the clock, Team BK completes their impressive comeback and move on to the Wheelchair Basketball Classic Championships to face Team Manhattan on today at 8pm. Game Replay and/or Highlights will be uploaded to iLuvBBall.com in the coming days.

Brentwood star breaks 44 year old Scoring Record!

Michael Almonacy breaks Mitch Kupchak’s Brentwood record!

Michael Almonacy broke Mitch Kupchak‘s school scoring record of 1,380 points in Brentwood’s game vs the William Floyd Colonials at home on Thursday, Jan. 7, 2016. Unless you live under a rock then you know that Mitch Kupchak is the general manager of the Los Angeles Lakers. Mitch scored 1,380 points and held that scoring record for Brentwood from 1970-72!

Mike came out the gate scoring like a man possessed! He ran off Brentwood’s first few points in the first quater to surpass Mitch‘s scoring record and finished with 18 points in Brentwood’s 104-48 win over the Colonials. See photo below of Michael Almonacy of Brentwood shooting the jumper to break Kupchak‘s record.

After the game Mike received a call from Mitch Kupchak himself congratulating Michael on his accomplishment. When we asked how he felt about breaking the 44 year scoring record held by the current GM of the Los Angeles Lakers his response was that, the best part of this whole experience was the congratulatory phone call from Mitch Kupchak. Michael Almonacy, a senior who committed to playing basketball for Stony Brook has a bright future ahead of him and many more benchmarks to acheive in his basketball career. He’s a great kid as well as a player and the skies the limit for him. See photo below of Mike Almonacy in post game ceremony with commemorative game ball.
